Digital media in physical education
In this interview, IT teacher, media educator and speaker Julian Ruckdäschel explains why it makes sense to enhance your physical education classes with digital tools.
In this interview, IT teacher, media educator and speaker Julian Ruckdäschel explains why it makes sense to enhance your physical education classes with digital tools.
Julian Ruckdäschel: It makes a lot of things easier, clearer, and more professional. For example, quickly created tournament schedules and calculated tables can save a lot of time and paper. You can increase the amount of time your students spend on the course. Your own lesson planning and documentation can also be made easier with sport-specific apps. Especially visual representations and diagrams can often provide an interesting overview.
Julian Ruckdäschel:According to the Octalysis framework, there are eight different core drivers of motivation. Digital tools can enhance or enable them. For example, one core driver is unpredictability. This could be implemented, for example, with a random number generator app that is used regularly at the beginning of class.
Other core drivers are empowerment and achievement. Both are aimed at achieving progress. When learning movement, video analysis enhances understanding because the target movement can be visually reproduced for comparison. With the right apps, this can be easily integrated.
Apps for personal use offer even more possibilities because they address even more factors. For example, if the goal is to save the world (Zombie Run) or to compete with others around the world (Adidas Run), the core drives of meaning and social influence are used for motivation.
Julian Ruckdäschel: The principle is to extend teaching with digital media (for now). Different tools can be combined individually. Usually you end up with two or three standard tools. This is also important for the training: You do not have to use all the tools after this training. Instead, you pick the highlights that you find useful and try them out. The criteria will vary, but some typical ones are
– Quick use in class/long-term use e.g. documentation
– Are personal data requested/privacy compliant?
– Free/with advertisement/cost
– Platform
Julian Ruckdäschel: Well, don’t forget the password for your educational materials. Make sure your devices are always charged. Then you will have removed the most important obstacles to your own use.If the tablet is to be used in the gym, the rules should be clearly discussed beforehand, e.g. who is allowed to use the tablet, otherwise disputes can arise.
Julian Ruckdäschel: A tool that can be used quickly from time to time and/or that enhances the lesson to some extent. For this purpose the presented applications “Decide Now” (as a collection of exercises and random generator), the tournament planner “Competition Manager” or also “Video Delay” (time-delayed playback for student-centered technique analysis) are suitable. The basic structure of the lessons remains the same, but can be improved by small changes. If there are problems with the technology, the lesson will still be possible. Especially in the gym there must be little idle time. This danger is practically non-existent with these tools.
In this training, you’ll learn how to effectively use digital media even in physical education classes.
