In this interview, Yasemin Kaymak, a teacher of English, Spanish and music, explains how to use digital tools effectively and successfully in the Spanish classroom – and why she wouldn’t want to do without them.

How do digital tools compare to, or complement, analog methods in language teaching?

Yasemin Kaymak: Digital tools complement my Spanish classes because they are interactive and usually motivate the students directly. Compared to analog tools or media, they simply give me more options to design my lessons. It is also important to me that, depending on the tool, visualization plays an important role and that some students are better able to listen and pay attention.

Yasemin Kaymak: Digital tools also make it possible to learn independently and get immediate feedback. It is very easy to differentiate, so you can work at different levels, but of course it depends on the tool.

Yasemin Kaymak teaches English, Spanish, and music at a comprehensive school. Early on, she became interested in productivity, time management, routines, and mindfulness. Out of her passion for these topics, she started her podcast “Endlich Produktiv” and has been releasing a new podcast episode every Sunday since 2021.

Her goal is to help teachers get more done with less effort, so they have more time for the things that really matter in life.

How is the use of digital applications received by your students? Can you give an example from your teaching?

Yasemin Kaymak:In most cases, students are motivated when I use digital applications in class or when they can interact with them. Just this past school year, I conducted a survey in which students anonymously gave their feedback on the class reading, allowing me to evaluate how the novel was really received in class. I really appreciate that honest, anonymous feedback!

Your training introduces you to a wide range of tools. How do you learn and use new digital tools?

Yasemin Kaymak: I usually discover them by chance on social media platforms or through newsletters. Depending on the tool, I simply test them out to see if I can integrate them into my classroom and if they add value. Sometimes I keep the tools, and sometimes they don’t work for my teaching. But I do test new tools from time to time and try to keep up to date.

What digital tools would you not want to miss in the Spanish classroom?

Yasemin Kaymak: The many possibilities that these tools offer! The tools I use to supplement “analog” lessons manage to motivate my students, simply because it’s not a “traditional” lesson.
